How To Keep Your Van Organised

Let’s face it, with all the daily jobs we have on our plate, tidying your van can be the least of your priorities. But, we’re here to help out. Read on to discover some work van setup ideas, from storage racks to general due diligence checks.

How to Organise A Work Van

If you’re struggling for room in your van, then you need to use your storage space wisely. To make the most of what you have, there are numerous strategies, tools, and solutions available. Here’s how to do just that:

De-clutter Your Van

Before you even think about introducing new storage techniques, you’ll need to get rid of the existing mess. When you’re rushing around places, it’s easy to leave your lunch wrappers or empty coffee cups in the van. So, start by gathering all loose items into a bag and making some space.

To help avoid this in future, consider keeping a small container/bin in your storage area and make sure to deposit your empty packaging here.

This is especially crucial for the front of your van, as this is the only area where onlookers can see inside. Potential customers and other people passing by may then perceive your business as sloppy and unprofessional if you have clutter and rubbish on your dashboard/windshield. Not only this, but unnecessary rubbish can make your life more difficult by creating obstacles.

Keep On Top Of it

Try to spend a quick few minutes at the end of each day tidying your van. Doing this everyday will reduce any build-up, preventing an overwhelming amount of clutter and rubbish to clean up.

Making sure you put in place a regular cleaning routine can help boost productivity because it will cut down the time you spend looking for tools and supplies. It will seem like a chore at the time, but will definitely be worth it in the long run.

Organise Vertically

Stack any goods vertically along the interior walls of your van to make use of the vertical space there. Sort things according to size, starting with the smallest. For organising minor parts, shelves with stackable bins and storage containers work well.

To hang medium-sized hand tools and power equipment, you can install a pegboard with hooks. You should also consider hanging lightweight items like extension cords from the ceiling, as this will keep them out of your way and prevent tangling.

Give Everything a Place

In addition to vertically sorting items, you should also consider where specific objects are placed. Designating sections and areas for certain tools allows you to find things much quicker, preventing you from trudging through piles of excess.

Keep things you use frequently close to the doors so you can get to them quickly. For goods like tool belts that you use all day, attach a hook or shelf next to the door; items you use less frequently can be kept close to the back of the van.

Speaking of regularly used materials, there’s no reason why you can’t keep some of these things within your van door. To store tiny, lightweight equipment, hang plastic or cloth closet organisers with pockets or magnetised stripping to make the most of your storage space.

Light Your Van Up

No matter what time of day it is, hanging tap-activated lights on the interior side of your van doors will help you see and locate what you need. We also advise hanging a work light or lantern from the back of the van. Battery-operated models are great for this, as they won’t run down your van’s battery while in use.

Group Items Together

When working on a project, especially intricate jobs like plumbing, small tools are a necessity for tightening unusually small nuts and fixings. Unfortunately, small tools are notorious for going missing thanks to their sometimes-miniscule footprints.

Smaller tools can be organised into zip bags and clearly labelled buckets for easy access without making a mess. Doing this ensures you’ll never have to hunt through piles of larger tools ever again.
